In the Commonwealth match on Friday night at Cassel Arena in Blacksburg, Virginia, No. 9 Virginia Tech defeated No. 9 Virginia Wrestling 33-3 to end the regular season for Virginia Wrestling.
The Hokies have triumphed in nine out of ten weight divisions, including the last seven by a wide margin. The single victory for Virginia came in a 165-pound match between No. 16 Justin McCoy of Virginia Tech and No. 27 Conor Brady of Virginia Tech. Brady was defeated by McCoy by a slim margin of 5-4, limiting UVA to just three points overall.
In a string of top-ranked contests, UVA came just short of snagging a few victories. No. 31 Michael Batista fell to No. 22 Andy Smith on 197, losing 3-1, while No. 27 Jarod Verkleeren defeated No. 149, winning 8-4. To reach No. 7 Hunter Bolen, No. 8 Caleb Henson defeated No. 16 Neil Andrassian 9-5 184.
Virginia has an 8-6 overall record and a 1-4 record in ACC play as of the end of the regular season doubles schedule. Next, on March 5 at the NC State campus in Raleigh, NC, UVA will compete in the ACC Tournament.
