Augusta, GA Death: On Wednesday, October 30, 2024, a 15-year-old Augusta, GA youngster died as the result of a shooting. Authorities in Richmond County have identified a teenage girl and a male as suspects in one of two new Augusta homicides.
The sheriff’s office has not identified the suspects, but warrants charge the duo with the unfortunate death of 15-year-old Devayn Grissam. The Augusta youngster was tragically shot Wednesday night at 2346 Helsinki Drive and was declared dead at Wellstar MCG Health.
The teen’s death increased the county’s homicide count to 39, surpassing last year’s total of 38 homicides. However, the homicide tally swiftly rose to 40 after a man’s body was discovered Thursday morning in Elliott Park on Lumpkin Road. Deputies rushed to an unresponsive person on the ground and discovered the body of 59-year-old Michael Whitfield, who was homeless. Coroner Mark Bowen determined that he died as a result of sustained blunt force trauma. (If you have a photograph of Michael to contribute, please text it to 803-487-3224.)
The sheriff’s office has not commented on potential suspects in that case. Meanwhile, Devayn’s aunt, Telisha Grissam, lamented her nephew on Facebook with a heartfelt message: “Please pray for our family. My nephew was just killed. Please put your guns down. He’s only 15 years old and already gone.”
On Thursday afternoon, Grissam wrote, “They got them.” However, the sheriff’s office has yet to confirm the arrests. The bureau does not always issue press announcements following murder arrests.
