Singer-songwriter Ivan Cornejo is a bilingual American-Mexican from Mexico. In middle school, Cornejo experienced a breakup that gave him the idea to start creating music. By watching instructional videos on YouTube, he taught himself how to play the guitar. He began by learning Ritchie Valens’ “La Bamba” on the piano.
Alma Vacia, Cornejo’s debut album, reached its highest point at No. 2 on the Top Latin Albums chart and No. 7 on the U.S. Billboard Mexico Regional Albums chart. The album reached a peak of No. 156 on the Billboard 200 list and spent 35 weeks in the top ten of the Mexican Regional Albums chart. It sold 7,000 album-equivalent units. He topped Billboard’s Latin Songwriters chart for the week ending October 30, 2021, thanks to his songwriting accomplishments. The New York Times picked Alma Vacia as one of the year’s top albums.
In September 2021, the song “Está Daada” gained a lot of popularity on TikTok. It was the second song from Mexico to make it into the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 61. Cornejo was featured in Billboard magazine’s “Rising Star Artist” category for October 2021.
For the week ending June 18, 2022, his second studio album, Daado, debuted at the top of the Mexican Regional Albums list. The album peaked at No. 4 on the top Latin albums chart, sold 8,000 album-equivalent units, and received 11.9 million streaming of its songs. Manzana Records received their first number-one album thanks to Daado. The album’s peak position on the Billboard 200 list was number 28.
For the Premios Juventud in 2022, Cornejo has been selected as the New Mexico Regional Artist. His musical influences are Grupo Los De La O and T3R Elemento. Alternative rock, which Cornejo’s mother and brother listened to when they were younger, had an impact on the guitar solos in his songs.
