Vancouver was home to Canadian composer and music educator Jocelyn Morlock (1969–2023). The 2018 Juno Award for Classical Composition of the Year went to My Name is Amanda Todd.
In Manitoba’s St. Boniface, Morlock was born. She completed a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance at Brandon University (B.Mus. 1994) where she studied with Gerhard Ginader (Electroacoustic Music) Taught by T. Patrick Carrabré et al. 6. She had previously studied piano with Robert Richardson, Sr. She received her Master of Musical Arts and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees (M.M. 1996, M.M. 2002) from the University of British Columbia, where she studied music under the tutelage of the late Russian-Canadian composer Nikolai Korndorf as well as Stephen Chatman and Keith Hamel.
Jocelyn Morlock was the inaugural composer-in-residence at Music on Main in Vancouver, co-hosting The ISCM International New Music Day, which ended in 2017. She was also the composer-in-residence (2014–2019) with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra after completing her stint (2012–2014).
The quartet “Birds in the Tangled Sky” by Morlock was performed in Romania in 1999 as part of the International Association of Contemporary Music’s World Music Day[16]. She then placed in the top 10 of the 2002 International Composers’ Podium and won the Prairie Region Emerging Competition Composer award at the Canadian Music Center in 2004.
