John Scott Death And Obituary – We had a memorial service for Sqn Ldr. John Scott RAFVR(T), who died away recently, yesterday. John’s memorial service was attended by a sizable number of Wing members, both past and present, which shows how highly his contemporaries thought of and valued him. Representatives from each of the squadrons he had served with brought their own banners, and they all took part in the guard of honor that was held at the crematorium beside the banner of the Wing.
He was the Squadron Commander at that site for the following four years. As a result, he took a break from the company for a while so that he could focus more on his young family. 1993 saw the promotion of the detached flight at Newton Aycliffe to the rank of a squadron, and John played a key role in the establishment of the new civilian committee.
In 1976, John enlisted in the Air Training Corps as a cadet with 1338 (Seaham) Squadron ATC. He advanced through the ranks to the position of Cadet Flight Sergeant before opting to leave the company in order to devote more time to his studies in electrical engineering. When the detached flight in Newton Aycliffe’s 2505 Bishop Auckland Squadron of Royal Air Force Air Cadets opened in 1984, he returned to the company as a volunteer Civilian Instructor.
