Man dies after falling 200 feet while canyoneering in Zion National Park

A tragic incident occurred Saturday at Zion National Park, resulting in the death of one individual during a canyoneering activity.

Park officials confirmed they received a call at approximately 6 p.m. regarding an incident involving a 40-year-old man who fell approximately 200 feet near the exit of Heaps Canyon. He was canyoneering alongside three companions, and authorities indicated they were adhering to their approved itinerary.

The emergency response was initiated by Zion’s search-and-rescue team alongside deputies from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, who arrived to deliver critical care. The individual was subsequently lifted to a helicopter landing zone at Watchman Campground by the Utah Department of Safety’s aircraft.

A LifeFlight helicopter was dispatched to transport the victim to the hospital; however, officials report that he succumbed to his injuries prior to being loaded onto the aircraft.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends as they navigate this incredibly challenging period,” stated Zion National Park Superintendent Jeff Bradybaugh.

The identity of the victim remains undisclosed at this time.

Following the incident, the three remaining canyoneers stayed put throughout the night until help arrived. On Sunday morning, the DPS helicopter crew successfully hoisted two individuals to safety. At approximately 2 p.m., the third individual descended the canyon, aided by the park’s search and rescue team, and reached the ground safely.
