Friends have paid tribute to the ‘larger than life’ surfer, who had lived on the Gold Coast on and off.

Mr Thomson was allegedly knocked unconscious and hit his head hard on the ground after a fight outside the Pier Bar on a night out with friends.

He was rushed to hospital in a critical condition but sadly his life support was switched off on Tuesday morning.

Friends have spoken of their heartbreak at losing an ‘incredible man filled with love’.

Damon Goodwin, said the tradie was always living life for the moment.

His tattoo on his arm that read ‘time waits for no one’ was his motto in life, he told 7 News.

‘He cherished every moment and every second of his life,’ Mr Goodwin said.

In a heartbreaking GoFundMe post, set up by Mr Goodwin to raise money for the family and funeral costs, he spoke of Thomson’s serious injuries.

‘Bottom line is, Brett has suffered extreme brain damage, brain swelling, bleeding and has no neurological control of his body and never will. His life support is only a short-term system. A life soon to be passed on, but never forgotten,’ he said.

The campaign has raised almost $14,000 in two days since it was first set up and his friends used it as an opportunity to share what they loved about Thomson.

‘Love to you Thomo, the family, our beautiful friends. You are so loved mate,’ one wrote.

‘Tommo, the incredible amount of love and affection from your mates over the past few days will give your family great pride and comfort,’ another person said.

His aunt Kim Thomson spoke before his death and said he was a popular figure with a love for the outdoors and his roofing job.

‘He was just full of life, it’s not good to see him so still. He has many friends there on the Gold Coast,’ Ms Thomson said to the Gold Coast Bulletin.

Ms Thomson said he had only moved to Cairns early this year where he embraced the outdoors.
