She had been travelling with her parents, siblings and grandparents in a week-long trip through the Caribbean, AP reports.

Chloe reportedly slipped from her grandfather Salvatore Anello’s hands, out the window.

A witness on board the vessel told Telemondo PR they heard the child’s mother Kimberly Schultz Wiegand scream out.

“(We heard) the screams of the families because we were close,” the tourist said.

“A scream of pain of that nature. It does not compare to any other scream,” they said of the mother’s scream.

Investigators said Anello had sat the toddler on the edge of the window, where the family was gathered near a dining hall.

They’re now trying to work out whether the window was already open or if someone had opened it.

The South Bend Police Department in Indiana identified the young girl’s father as one of their officer’s Alan Wiegand.

“The South Bend Police Department offers its sincerest condolences to Officer Alan Wiegand and his family during this difficult time following the tragic loss of their child while in Puerto Rico,” the department said in a statement.

The family will remain in the American territory until the police investigation is complete.

Royal Caribbean released a statement saying they were “deeply saddened” by the tragic accident.

“Our hearts go out to the family,” Royal Caribbean’s communications manager Owen Torres wrote in a statement.

“Out of respect for their privacy, we do not plan to comment further on the incident.”
