Phindile Sibiya was found guilty and given a 22-year direct prison term by the Mpumalanga High Court in South Africa for killing her female newborn and perverting the course of justice.

On November 9, after entering a guilty plea to willfully killing her infant and interring her body in a shallow grave, the 26-year-old lady from Belfast’s Bushbuckridge neighborhood received her punishment.

Sibiya said in court that she met a particular individual in 2021 who had previously paid a visit to her farmhouse in Belfast Trust.

She accepted the man’s proposal of love because he promised to marry her in the future.

They had consenting, unprotected intercourse during their second encounter, which led to her being pregnant. She attempted to call the prospective father to alert him of the issue after becoming aware that she was pregnant, but his phone was no longer functional until her mother became aware of the situation. Despite knowing she was pregnant, she lied when her mother questioned her.

Given that she already had two minor children from different dads who weren’t providing for them, the mother threatened her, saying that if it turned out that she was pregnant, she would kick her out of the house.

She then made the decision to visit the clinic to end the pregnancy, but she was too far along to be successful.

After that, she concealed her pregnancy until the day of her delivery, which was January 1, 2022. She experienced labor pains, went to the bathroom twice, passed pee, and on the third visit, she also brought a pair of scissors.

She gave birth to a female kid while on her way to the bathroom, and as soon as she was born, she repeatedly stabbed the child with scissors till she died.

In the morning, her mother noticed blood stains and upon questioning her, the accused admitted having given birth and concealed the deceased.

She then went to retrieve the deceased body and the matter was reported to the police hence her conviction and sentence.

In aggravation of the sentence, State Adv. Tula Bekwa told the court that the deceased suffered a cold and painful death at the hands of her mother, who was supposed to protect her.

A photo album and a post-mortem report which confirmed that the deceased was born alive, were handed in including a social work report and it proved that the accused is not a candidate for correctional supervision.
