In a crowded courtroom, a Minnesota judge sentenced a man to life in prison without the chance of parole for shooting and killing his first wife 13 years ago and lying to detectives that it happened during a burglary.
Several of Heidi Felkus’ friends and family members delivered tearful victim statements before a judge sentenced Nick Felkus, 40, for his crimes. For years, Nick Philcus has maintained her innocence and that her death was caused by an unknown invader.
Prosecutors, on the other hand, claimed there was no evidence to back up his claims of intruders and that he lied about his wife’s debts. “Every murder is tragic.” This one was very egregious. “He kept his identity hidden behind his back for years,” said Elizabeth Raming, Assistant District Attorney for Ramsey County, Minnesota.
Heidi Firkus dialed 911 on April 25, 2010, reporting that the couple’s home had been broken into and that they had stopped talking after being shot. Her spouse had been shot in the leg, and police discovered her body.

Felkus also informed officials that the couple was in serious financial trouble and should be deported, but he and Heidi kept this information hidden from family and friends.
However, considering the contradictions in Nick Firkus’ statement, detectives are still looking into his role in his wife’s death. There was no evidence of a break-in, and only Nick Fercus’ DNA was discovered on the shotgun.
Philcus was arrested and charged with first- and second-degree murder in May 2021. Prosecutors claim Nick Fercus murdered his wife to avoid the stigma of her financial struggle.
On February 10, after four hours of deliberation, the jury convicted Nick Firkus on two charges. In his impact statement, Heidi Firkus’ brother Peter Erickson attacked Nick Firkus.
“It was nearly impossible for us to end our grief when the shock of Heidi’s murder began because of the lies we were told the day after her murder and the pressure to believe them.” It didn’t take long for me to realize this. “Nick told us who the sister is,” he continued.
