Officers from the Portage Police Department were called to the intersection of Willowcreek Road and Lute Road on Tuesday, November 8, 2022, at around 5:45 p.m. in connection to a car accident with injuries. Upon arrival, it was discovered that there had been an accident involving a total of six vehicles.
Officers discovered that one patient had passed away, another was conscious but confined in their car, and a third had suffered only minor head injuries. While the other involved drivers and passengers complained of pain, they did not ask to be sent to a hospital for treatment. The driver who suffered a head injury was taken by ambulance for treatment to a nearby hospital and is expected to recover.
According to the preliminary findings of the investigation, a gray 2016 Cadillac SUV was going south on Willowcreek Road at a high rate of speed when it collided with a white GMC SUV that was stopped two cars away from the red light at Lute Road.
All three vehicles passed through the intersection entirely and came to stop on the south side of Lute Road after the Cadillac impacted the GMC with such force that it was pushed into the back of a third vehicle. Following this first incident, three additional automobiles that were moving northbound on Willowcreek or on Lute Road were involved in subsequent collisions with the first three vehicles. A second vehicle came to rest on top of the Cadillac after one of the involved automobiles overturned and landed on its roof.
The Cadillac’s driver was successfully freed from the vehicle and flown to a nearby trauma hospital for treatment of critical head and abdominal injuries. He has been recognized as a Portage man in his forty-twos.
The reason or explanation for the car’s extreme speed is still being looked into. Lauren Tompson, 24, of Chesterton has been identified as the deceased, who was operating the white GMC.
Due to this collision, both lanes of traffic were blocked for around five hours while the Portage Police Department Crash Reconstruction Team investigated the site. This is a preliminary account of what happened, and it could alter when more information is uncovered as part of the continuing inquiry.
