Melodie Rainer Obituary: Keene Elementary Student Passed Away, Cause of Death

Our hearts were broken today by the loss of one of our Keene Elementary students and her mom.

First grader, Melodie Rainer, a beautiful young lady, full of energy and life passed away this afternoon as a result of a tragic automobile accident on Hwy 67, between Alvarado and Keene.

Our hearts go out to the family in this time of heartbreak as we as a community undertake the task of supporting the Rainer family through this difficult time.

I have been an administrator for over 30 years and yet nothing can prepare you for the loss of a child. Procedurally, we respond in a manner that stresses support for survivors in a timely fashion. Intellectually, our staff knows the protocols that must be put in place when this type of tragic event confronts our students, staff and families. Emotionally though, we are never prepared when a young child leaves us too soon, and we weep as a community.

The loss of a student is a difficult and challenging situation that can generate a high level of anxiety and distress in students. During this time, as the school community processes this news and copes with grief, the school district will offer counseling support services to all of our students, staff and parents who may be struggling with ways to explain this situation to their child. Counselors and local clergy will be on hand at Keene Elementary for students and staff who need support tomorrow. If you would like to speak with a counselor, please call (817) 774-5323.

We encourage parents and guardians to talk with their children about this event. Discussing thoughts and feelings about this situation is important in helping your child work through his/her grief.
