Transfer rumors: Chelsea can sweeten the Matthijs de Ligt trade by using a 23-year-old star
The possibility exists that Chelsea might leverage Juventus’ interest in Christian Pulisic to secure a move for Matthijs de Ligt, according to Tuttosport via Marca (h/t football. net). For the past few weeks, the 22-year-old center back’s transfer to Stamford Bridge has received significant media attention.
Following the departures of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen, Thomas Tuchel wants to improve his defense. To assist with this issue, he has chosen the young Dutchman.
After an outstanding campaign at Ajax, when he helped his team win the domestic league and cup double and go to the Champions League semifinals, De Ligt transferred to Juventus. He was Italy’s most expensive defender after being hired by the Old Lady for €75 million.
The most expensive defender in the history of the Italian top division is Matthijs de Ligt.
The winger Christian Pulisic is reportedly being offered by Chelsea to help sweeten the deal for the Dutchman. The USMNT winger, 23, is reportedly a target for the Bianconeri.
Defensive woe to end?
The 22-year-old would be an excellent signing for Tuchel. He would help in solving the defensive crisis up to a certain extent. The defender would fit in the German’s tactical system as he has played in the back three system, especially for the Netherlands.
It is not surprising that Juve would want a big fee, given that de Ligt is a regular starter for them and also veteran defender Giorgio Chiellini moved to the MLS. Juventus’ interest in Pulisic could help bring down the asking price but it remains to be seen if such a proposition goes anywhere productive.
Chelsea will hope to find an acceptable solution for all parties involved. The earlier they can strike a deal, the better it will be for the player and club.
It is also important for the club to not weaken elsewhere in their bid to strengthen at the back. We would need good backup in all areas of the pitch. A straight cash offer would, of course, be something that would then make sense.
But then again, Juve may not be willing to sell De Ligt on the cheap. This is a deal that our board would have to work to get across the line, given the player’s importance to his team and his age profile.
