Official: Chelsea loanee Levi Colwill joins Brighton & Hove Albion

Following today’s acquisition of Marc Cucurella from Brighton & Hove Albion, Chelsea continued to do excellent business with the Seagulls by loaning out promising defender Levi Colwill to the Premier League team for the entire season.

Despite a flood of media stories saying otherwise, Brighton released an official statement clarifying that nothing had been agreed upon in the negotiations for Cucurella because Colwill’s loan was so crucial to the club. We still thought the 19-year-old would be joining Brighton on a permanent basis for £20–25 million, with a £50–million repurchase provision built in in case he reaches his full potential.

But as it turns out, we made the right decision, keeping Colwill, who still has a four-year deal with the Blues that was signed in June, and providing him a fantastic opportunity to flourish and prove to manager Thomas Tuchel that he is unquestionably prepared for the big stage next season.

“Levi has enormous potential and has already shown his ability last season in the Championship and with England at various age group levels up to under-21s.

“I am really looking forward to working with him on the training pitch, and in matches over the course of the season.

“He plays mostly at centre-back, but has also played on the left as a full-back, and he is a player who is comfortable on the ball.”

Good luck, Levi!
