The incident happened at the 88th school in Izhevsk, a city located in the Udmurt region 600 kilometers east of Moscow.

The gunman was identified as 34-year-old Artem Kazantsev, a graduate of the same institution, and the Russian Investigative Committee noted that he was donning a black T-shirt bearing “Nazi insignia.” His motivations were not made public in full.

According to the committee, 24 people, including 22 children, were hurt in the attack, and 15 individuals, including 11 children, were murdered in the shooting.

Alexander Brecharov, the governor of Udmurt, claimed the shooter, who was listed as a patient in a psychiatric hospital, committed suicide after the attack.

Peskov told reporters on Monday that President Putin “expresses his heartfelt condolences for the deaths of people and children at the school where the terrorist incident took place.”

Children in the first through eleventh grades—the last year of Russian high school—are educated at the institution. According to the governor, it was evacuated, and the neighborhood was roped off.

According to the Russian National Guard, Kazantsev employed two non-lethal weapons that could fire actual bullets. The authorities are not aware that these weapons exist.

The incident is under criminal investigation for multiple murders and illegal firearm ownership.
