Raleigh neighborhood shooting News: Sources told WRAL News that Austin Thompson, 15, was the one who was taken to the hospital where he is suspected of killing five people and wounding two others in Thursday’s shooting in an east Raleigh neighborhood.

One of the victims was Austin’s 16-year-old brother, James Roger Thompson, a junior at Knightdale High School. The school yearbook shows Austin as a sophomore.

 

At an 8:30 a.m. news conference Friday, Police Chief Estella Patterson said the 15-year-old male shooter was in critical condition at WakeMed. Sources told WRAL News that the gunman was Austin Thompson, the brother of 16-year-old James Roger Thompson, who was one of the five killed. (Facebook)

 

Classes are held on Friday, but the homecoming football game on Friday night is moved to 6:30 pm. on Monday. More back-to-school events will take place on October 28.

 

According to sources and property records, the brothers lived on Sahalle Way in the Hedingham area. As of 5 p.m. Friday, a solitary house was still there, surrounded by warning tape from the crime scene. Investigators left the house with bags of evidence throughout the day. Neighbors, who are also classmates of the suspect, told WRAL News they saw no red flags before Thursday’s shooting.

 

Raleigh Police Chief Estella Patterson said the first shots fired on the community streets before the gunman ran onto the News River Greenway, and more people were shot. During the hour-long search, law enforcement officers tracked Austin Thompson to an annex of a property about six miles from his home and took him into custody.

 

Patterson said Austin Thompson was in critical condition at WakeMed. Sources told WRAL News that Austin Thompson suffered multiple injuries, including a bullet to the head.

Wake County District Attorney Lorraine Freeman said if Thompson survives, despite his age, she expects him to be charged as an adult. “Given the high number of deaths, this case should be brought to the High Court and this person should be charged as an adult.”

 

Five people were killed and two injured in the riots, but the timeline is unclear. The victims are: Raleigh Police Officer Gabriel Torres, 29; the suspect’s brother James Thompson; Nicole Connors, 52; Mary Marshall, 34, and Susan Kanats, 49 . “He must be between 13 and 16 years old, max,” said witnesses who saw the gunman. “He was a kid. You just can’t imagine things like this. You’ve heard about school shootings and things like that, but seeing something like this in your neighborhood is really…”

 

Neighbors were stunned. A man named Robert, a Hedingham resident, told WRAL News he called 911 around 5pm. “I heard two shots, very loud, so I knew there was something nearby, and then I heard three more shots,” he said. “I saw him walking past my house in the backyard. He had a long-barreled shotgun. He was wearing camouflage. He was carrying a full backpack, also in disguise.”

 

Although witnesses described a long gun, police did not say what type of gun the shooter used or where he got it. Roy Cooper said Thursday during a news conference at Raleigh City Hall. “Every community’s nightmare has come to Raleigh. This is a senseless, horrific and outrageous act of violence that has been committed.”
