As if the region of Southern California hadn’t already had enough extreme weather this year, a tornado struck Montebello late on Wednesday morning and caused building damage.
Around 11:30 a.m., the twister was initially noticed near South Vail Street and Washington Boulevard.
Many KTLA viewers were able to record the tornado’s strong rotation as it tore off the roof of a sizable business building and hurled debris into the air.
An EF1 tornado did indeed touch down in Montebello, a city located just east of downtown Los Angeles, according to a National Weather Service damage survey team that was sent there.
On March 22, 2023, KTLA viewer “IDKLeroy on IG/ Tik Tok” recorded video of the tornado that hit Montebello.
A tornado classified as EF0 has three-second wind gusts of 65 to 85 mph. EF1 winds range from 86 to 110 mph. The EF4 and EF5 tornadoes, which are the most severe, can reach wind speeds of up to 200 mph.
