A well-known name in electrical engineering and power electronics is David Irwin. In addition to his work on high-frequency power conversion and renewable energy systems, he is renowned for his contributions to the design and analysis of power electronic systems.
Irwin holds degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the University of Kentucky, and the University of California, USA. He also holds a PhD in electrical engineering from the University of California. He joined Auburn University in 1985 after completing his studies and is now a professor emeritus in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
Irwin wrote or co-wrote more than 170 technical publications and many textbooks over his career, including Engineering Circuit Analysis and Principles of Electricity: Sources, Conversions, Distribution, and Use. His efforts in this field are concentrated on the creation of novel control schemes for renewable energy systems and the investigation of how renewable energy affects the stability and dependability of grids.
In acknowledgment of his contributions to the field of electrical engineering, Irwin has won various prizes and distinctions. He is an IEEE Fellow and the winner of the IEEE Power Electronics Society’s William E. Newell Award, the IEEE Industry Applications Society’s Distinguished Achievement Award, and the IEEE Power and Energy Society’s Distinguished Power Engineering Educator Award.
