An AI expert with more than 20 years of expertise in the field of AI safety research claims that an open letter calling for a six-month embargo on the creation of potent AI systems is insufficient.
Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, and hundreds of others are working to create “AI systems more powerful than GPT-4,” according to Eliezer Yudkowsky, a decision theorist at the Institute for Machine Intelligence. The six-month “pause” urged other innovators and pundits to downplay the “seriousness of the matter.” He would even go so far as to implement “indefinite and global” pauses for brand-new, expansive AI learning models.
More than 1,000 people, including Musk and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, signed the letter, which was released by the Future of Life Institute and makes the case that safety regulations must be created by unbiased watchdogs to direct AI in the future.
The letter states that “robust AI systems should only be developed when we are satisfied that their effects are beneficial and that their dangers are manageable.” That, in Yudkowski’s opinion, is insufficient.
The main concern, as stated in the open letter, is not “human rivalry for intelligence;” rather, it is what would happen when AI surpasses human intelligence, according to Yudkowski’s article in Newsweek.
In a scenario as remote as the present, he claims, “many experts working on these themes, including myself, anticipate that the most likely conclusion of constructing a superhumanly intelligent AI is that everyone on Earth dies.” It’s like, “That’s plainly going to happen.” It’s not like, “Maybe it’s a faraway coincidence.”
On February 7, 2023, in Redmond, Washington, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman gives a major speech during which Microsoft announced the integration of ChatGPT for Bing. The most sophisticated AI system yet created, OpenAI’s new GPT-4 learning model can generate, edit, and iterate with users on tasks involving artistic and technical writing.

According to Yudkowsky, the issue is that an AI that is more intelligent than humans may defy its designers and disregard human life. Don’t picture the movie “Terminator” in your head instead, he urged. “Imagine an entire alien civilization thinking millions of times faster than humans, initially restricted to computers – in a world of creatures who, from their point of view, are very stupid and Very slowly.
Yudkowsky warns that there are presently no plans for a superintelligence that believes that eradicating all life on Earth would be the best solution to every problem it is asked to address would be the best solution. He is also concerned that AI researchers are unsure of when learning models have “confidence” and whether it is moral to use them at that point.
